Bitcoin only vs multi currency crypto ATM which should you use
Standing in front of a crypto ATM, you see a screen offering Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum. The machine looks the same. The touchscreen menu looks the same. But the actual cost of your transaction can differ sharply depending on which coin you pick.
Most multi-currency ATMs apply a similar percentage spread across all assets they offer. The operator's fee is usually a flat markup on the exchange rate. That part is roughly equal whether you buy Bitcoin or Litecoin. The difference comes from what happens after you hit "confirm."
Bitcoin's network fees and confirmation times are higher than Litecoin's. This is a structural fact of the two blockchains. For a small purchase - say $50 or $100 worth of crypto - the Bitcoin network fee can eat a noticeable chunk of your buy. Litecoin's fees are typically a few cents. Its block time is 2.5 minutes against Bitcoin's 10 minutes. That means your Litecoin transaction clears faster and costs less to move out of the ATM wallet.
You can exploit this difference. Buy Litecoin at the same ATM, pay the same operator spread, then swap it for Bitcoin on an exchange later. The total cost can be lower than buying Bitcoin directly at the machine. This works best when the ATM's percentage fee is fixed per transaction rather than scaled to the network cost.
There is a catch. The ATM gives you a paper receipt with a QR code and a wallet address. If you are not paying close attention, you can scan that QR code into a Bitcoin wallet. The machine will send Litecoin to the address you provided. If you gave a Bitcoin address, the Litecoin never arrives. It is lost. No reversal. No refund.
Multi-currency ATMs display the coin type on screen and on the receipt. The error happens when a user assumes all crypto addresses look alike. They do not. A Bitcoin address starts with 1, 3, or bc1. A Litecoin address starts with L or M. An Ethereum address is a 0x-prefixed hex string. If you copy-paste, check the first character. If you scan a QR code, verify the coin symbol on the machine before hitting send.
The experience at the machine is similar for all coins. You insert cash, scan a wallet QR, and wait for the transaction to broadcast. The machine prints a receipt. The difference is invisible until you check the block explorer. Litecoin shows up in minutes. Bitcoin can take twenty minutes or more during congestion. Ethereum can spike in fee cost unpredictably.
For small amounts, Litecoin is often the cheaper and faster path out of the ATM. For large amounts - thousands of dollars - the network fee percentage shrinks relative to the total, and Bitcoin's liquidity and acceptance may matter more. The ATM operator's spread is the same either way.
The risk of sending to the wrong address type is real. It is not theoretical. People do it. The ATM cannot check whether the address format matches the coin. It sends what you tell it to send. If you instruct the machine to send Litecoin to a Bitcoin address, the transaction broadcasts successfully on the Litecoin network. The coins go to an address that exists. But only the Bitcoin network recognizes that address format. The Litecoin network sees it as a valid output. The coins are stuck. No one controls the private key for that address on the Litecoin blockchain because no Litecoin wallet generated it.
Some ATMs now warn you with a screen that says "Verify the coin type matches your wallet." Not all do. The responsibility is yours.
Multi-currency ATMs give you a choice. The choice is not just between coins. It is between network fees, confirmation speed, and error risk. For a quick, cheap purchase under a few hundred dollars, Litecoin makes sense. For a larger buy where you want to hold Bitcoin, buying Bitcoin directly at the ATM is simpler and avoids the extra swap step. For Ethereum, the same logic applies: network fees can be high, and the address format is distinct.
The machine does not care which you pick. The operator makes their spread either way. Your job is to match the coin to your wallet, your budget, and your patience. Check the address. Check the symbol. Then confirm.
