How long a crypto ATM transaction takes blockchain confirmation delay
When you use a crypto ATM, two separate things happen. The machine gives you credit almost instantly. The blockchain, however, takes its own time. Confusing the two is the most common source of anxiety at a kiosk.
The ATM itself settles your transaction immediately. It does this by paying you from its own hot wallet. You see the crypto in your wallet seconds after the machine scans your QR code. This is not a blockchain confirmation. It is the ATM operator trusting you before the network does.
True blockchain confirmation is slower. For Bitcoin, each new block is mined roughly every 10 minutes. One confirmation means one miner has included your transaction in a block. Most ATMs and exchanges consider one confirmation final for small amounts. Larger transactions often require three to six confirmations, which can take 30 minutes to an hour. Other coins are faster. Litecoin targets 2.5-minute blocks. Ethereum averages about 12 seconds. But none are instant in the way the ATM's screen suggests.
A network timeout error happens when the ATM's connection to the blockchain node drops before the transaction is broadcast. This is rare but frustrating. The machine may deduct the cash from your total or hold the crypto in limbo. If you see this error, do not walk away. Call the support number on the screen immediately. The operator can see whether the transaction was broadcast and can push a replacement if needed.
Transactions get stuck in the mempool when the network fee attached is too low. Miners prioritize transactions paying higher fees. During network congestion, a low-fee transaction can sit unconfirmed for hours or even days. The ATM estimates the fee at the moment you buy. That estimate can become wrong if the network spikes minutes later. The ATM operator, not you, controls the fee. You cannot increase it yourself from the kiosk. If your transaction is stuck, the only fix is to contact support and ask them to replace it with a higher-fee transaction.
While you wait, track your transaction. Every ATM receipt should include a transaction ID, a long string of letters and numbers. Go to Blockchain.com explorer or Mempool.space. Paste the ID into the search bar. You will see:
- Whether the transaction is still unconfirmed (status: pending)
- How many confirmations it has (for Bitcoin, each block adds one)
- The fee rate in satoshis per vbyte (higher is faster)
- The mempool congestion level
Mempool.space shows a visual color-coded chart of current fees. If your transaction appears in the yellow or green zone, expect a longer wait. If it appears in the red zone, it should confirm within the next block or two.
A common mistake is repeatedly hitting "send" or buying again because the balance does not appear. That only multiplies the problem. The first transaction is still in the mempool. A second, identical transaction will either be rejected or create a double-spend conflict. Neither helps. Wait 30 minutes. Check the explorer. If nothing has moved after one hour, contact support.
The ATM operator's hot wallet settles with the network eventually. They absorb the risk of you walking away with crypto before the blockchain finishes its work. Your risk is the fee being too low, not the machine cheating you. Patience, not panic, is the correct response. The blockchain does not care that you are standing in front of a kiosk. It processes transactions in the order miners choose, based on fee. That order can take 10 minutes. Or two hours. There is no way to speed it up from your end. But you can always check where your transaction sits in the queue. That at least replaces uncertainty with information.
